Some words show up again and again. Learn them and you’ll walk into almost every puzzle with a head start. Here’s why they repeat — and which ones to memorize.
The Usual Suspects
Words like ALOOF, ARBOR, FLORA, BOAR, and DODO pop up constantly. They’re built from letter combos the puzzle loves to reuse.
Keep a mental list of these regulars. When you see the right letters, check for them first. Free points.
Why They Keep Repeating
The NYT reuses letter sets. Same seven letters, same common words. If last month’s puzzle had these letters, you’ll recognize half the answers.
It’s not laziness — there are only so many good 7-letter combos in English. Repeats are baked into the game by design. Smart players use that to their advantage instead of fighting it.
Build Your Own List
After each game, write down the words you missed. Review the list weekly. Within a month you’ll have 100+ words that keep appearing.
This is the fastest way to improve. You’re not studying random vocabulary — you’re learning the exact words this game actually uses.
I keep mine in a notes app on my phone. One minute of review while waiting for coffee. It’s the highest-value minute of my Spelling Bee day.
Sort your list by starting letter. When a puzzle centers on B, scan your B-words in seconds. Organization turns a plain list into a real weapon.
Learn Patterns, Not Just Words
Knowing DRAB is a word helps once. Knowing that DR- starts tons of words helps forever. Learn the pattern behind the word.
When you miss a word, ask why you missed it. Was it a tricky start? A hidden plural? The pattern matters more than the single word.
I missed CONDESCEND three times before I realized I never think of CON- starts. Now I check CON- in every puzzle. One pattern, dozens of future words.
