READ →What Is the NYT Spelling Bee?
The NYT Spelling Bee is a daily word puzzle built around seven letters. The center letter must appear in every valid word, while the other six letters can be used in any combination. Letters can also be repeated within a word. A new puzzle is released each day, giving players a fresh set of letters and new words to discover.
7 Letters
Every puzzle contains seven letters arranged in a honeycomb.
Center Letter
The center letter must appear in every valid word.
Letters Can Repeat
Letters can be reused as many times as you like.
New Puzzle Every Day
A fresh puzzle arrives daily at 3:00 AM ET.
What Is a Spelling Bee Pangram?
A pangram is a word that uses all seven letters in the puzzle at least once. Finding a pangram is valuable because it earns a 7-point bonus in addition to the word’s regular score. A pangram can be longer than seven letters because letters can be repeated. Every Spelling Bee puzzle includes at least one pangram.

How to Play the NYT Spelling Bee
The rules are straightforward. Your goal is to create as many valid words as possible using the seven letters.
The Center Letter Is Required
Every valid word must contain the center letter at least once. The other six letters are optional.
Letters Can Be Reused
You can use any of the seven letters more than once in the same word.
Words Must Be at Least Four Letters Long
A valid answer must contain at least four letters. Words with fewer than four letters do not count.
Use Only the Seven Puzzle Letters
Every word must be made entirely from the seven letters shown in the puzzle. Letters outside the seven-letter set cannot be used.
Spelling Bee Scoring System
Spelling Bee scoring is based on the length of each word. Four-letter words are worth 1 point. Words with five or more letters are worth 1 point for each letter. A pangram earns its normal word score plus a 7-point bonus.

Tips & Strategies
Real techniques from people who stare at the hive every morning.
How to Find More Words
When you run out of ideas, start by combining the center letter with the surrounding letters. Look for familiar prefixes, suffixes, and common letter combinations instead of trying to guess complete words at random.
How to Look for the Pangram
You do not have to search for the pangram first. Finding several shorter words can help you see how the seven letters work together. Once you recognize useful combinations, look for a word that contains every letter.
Use Word Patterns to Find Hidden Words
When you find a useful beginning or ending, keep that pattern and change the other letters. One word can often lead to several related answers.
Work From Short Words to Longer Words
Start with four-letter words to learn which combinations work. Then use those patterns to look for longer words you may have missed.
Remember That Letters Can Repeat
Everyone forgets this one. Including me, at least once a week. You’re allowed to reuse letters as much as you want, so that double-P you’re skipping is probably hiding two answers. Stop treating the hive like you’ve only got seven letters to spend.
You don’t. You’ve got infinite letters, just seven kinds.
Try Different Forms of the Same Word
Found ‘play’? Good. Now don’t move on. (This is where I used to mess up. I’d find a word, feel clever, and leave four points sitting on the table.) Try playing, played, plays, player. Run every verb through every ending before hunting for something new.
Start With the Middle Letter
Build outward from the center, not inward from the edges. Sounds obvious, I know. But watch yourself next game. I bet you start with the outer letters anyway.
We all do. The center-first habit takes about a week to build, and it kills half your wasted guesses.
Look for Common Prefixes and Suffixes
RE, UN, IN. ING, ED, ER, LY. Tiny chunks, ridiculous payoff. Take any stem that works and bolt these on one after another, like trying combinations on a lock.
Because honestly? That’s exactly what you’re doing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the things players ask us most.
A pangram is a word that uses all seven letters in the puzzle at least once. Pangrams earn a 7-point bonus on top of their normal score, making them some of the most valuable words to find.
The NYT Spelling Bee gets a new puzzle every day at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Each new puzzle features a different set of seven letters and a new group of accepted words. Past puzzles may also be available through the Spelling Bee archive.
To reach Genius, you need to earn enough points in the daily puzzle. The Genius threshold is based on the total possible score for that puzzle and is set at about 70% of the maximum. Since each puzzle has a different total score, the number of points needed for Genius can vary from day to day.
Some Spelling Bee puzzles are more challenging than others because certain letter combinations make familiar words harder to spot. Unusual vowels, consonants, or word endings can also make it difficult to find additional answers. If you get stuck, try looking at the center letter in combination with different letters.
Four-letter words are worth 1 point. Words with five or more letters are worth 1 point for each letter. A pangram earns an additional 7-point bonus on top of its regular score. For example, a seven-letter pangram is worth 14 points.
